DV8 Kettlebell Education

Coursework and Testing—A Brief Overview

Join us for the DV8:

Kettlebell Practice & Teaching 3-Day Course, with Option to Certify

THE SPECIFICS FOR THOSE CHOOSING TO TEST FOR CERTIFICATION

Again, testing is an option. All students are welcome to come learn, including those who neither want or need to test or certify, and all will receive the same level of excellence in instruction and practice. If you choose to test, the following will assist you in knowing what you will be tested on.

You will note in the below descriptions that DV8 instructor testing standards do not rely on a student’s age, gender, or weight. While still delivering quite the challenge, and one intentionally designed to build better coaches, this is a considerable divergence from other certifying bodies in this industry space.

The Deadlift, Swing, Clean, Snatch, Hinge to Squat, Front Squat, Half Wedge GU (Get-Up)*, Teaching skills, Push-Up, and Strength & Endurance Challenge will be tested, using the DV8 concepts taught throughout the weekend. Teaching, Strength and Endurance Challenge, and Bodyweight component are outlines in their respective sections, located further down.

Kettlebell Skills tested as follows:

DV8 Deadlift — Double kettlebells 5 Reps /Single Kettlebell 5R(Right)/5L(Left)

DV8 Clean - Re-Set — Double Kettlebells 5 Reps /Single Kettlebell 5R/5L

DV8 Clean - Back-to-Back — Double Kettlebells 5 Reps /Single Kettlebell 5R/5L

DV8 Snatch - Re-Set — Single Kettlebell 5R/5L

DV8 Snatch - Back-to-Back — Single Kettlebell 5R/5L

DV8 Swing - Re-Set — Double Kettlebells 5reps /Single Kettlebell 5R/5L

DV8 Swing - Back-to-Back — Double Kettlebells 5reps /Single Kettlebell 5R/5L

DV8 Hinge to Squat — Bodyweight 5 reps

DV8 Hinge to Squat — Single Kettlebell 5 reps

DV8 Front Squat — Double Kettlebells 5 reps /Single kettlebell 5R/5L

*DV8 Half Wedge GU (Get-Up) — 3R/3L

*The entire Get-up will be taught and performed, the Half Wedge will be tested for strict form.

Kettlebell sizes will vary based on movement tested, and technique tests will not be by kettlebell weight. It will be up to the student to make smart choices during testing that gives them the best chance to demonstrate the skills above. Just as we should be coaching our students in the real-life training enviroment. Each DV8 Cert student should be able to execute the movement according to the DV8 system taught and practiced throughout the weekend, which is then also tested. Note that not all certifying courses through other certifying organizations require you to actually test out the teaching skill alongside a consistent portion of the curriculum dedicated to the skill of teaching itself, but they will hand you a teaching certificate if you can complete personal skills testing to their liking. If this is what you want, we are not the organization for you. More in the TEACHING section a few paragraphs below.

Strength & Endurance Challenge

Clean to Push Press with a Re-Clean after each rep — 20 reps (Cannot put the kettlebells down.)

Objective: Clean kettlebells into Rack. The student will proceed to Push Press the kettlebells into an overhead lockout position, the heels can come up or stay down and the student can either lower the kettlebells into the rack or let them be absorbed by a knee dip. After each Push Press there must be a re-clean. Kettlebells cannot be put down, only a rest in the Rack position is allowed during testing. A knee bend must be present during each rep and no strict presses will be allowed. There is no time limit.

Form counts in this Strength & Endurance Challenge (SEC). This is unlike other SEC tests, where form is openly accepted as sacrificed and would not pass skills testing in order to "get through" the endurance challenge testing. At DV8, again, we believe one competes how they practice, and so we have developed instead a Strength and Endurance test that is the same as we would expect our students to train themselves and their own students; 1) we do not sacrifice form; 2) the test is designed around real life application where this is not only doable, but it is also advantageous to the student’s/prospect's training, and 3) in no way leaves the student prone to injury. This is a Strength & Endurance Challenge that is also different in that it can be continuously trained moving forward upon certification completion, should the student wish—as it perpetually continues to build solid strength that is advantageous to the body and your overall training regimen, in a natural, unforced progression that is easily quantifiable.**

SEC Kettlebell Test Load: Students will determine their kettlebell test load prior to Certification weekend in order to train for the test safely and appropriately.

To do so, determine your comfortable 5 Rep Max Double Kettlebell Military Press. Then go one kettlebell size down from your max, and these will be the kettlebells you test with. For example, a Student presses double 28k's for 5, their test kettlebells will be 24k’s. Another example: a Student presses two 16k's for 5, so their test kettlebells will be 14k’s. If your Strength & Endurance test kettlebell load increases with your training prior to your course weekend, allow this intentional benefit that you have witnessed in real time, and be proud of your progress.**

(You will demonstrate your five rep max as described above, for confirmation, at the start of the weekend.)

TEACHING

It's one thing to be tested on performance and skills, but what makes an Instructor/Coach most impactful to their students is the ability to interact with their students. We will instruct and test on the ability to take the DV8 guidelines and apply these guidelines in various situations throughout the entire course.

PRESENTATION SKILLS

Your education includes material on presenting to, instructing and coaching, individuals and groups.

TEACHING TESTING

During testing, students must demonstrate they understand and are able to effectively practice the DV8 guidelines, concepts, and instruction tactics. These will be taught and practiced throughout the courseweekend and tested, along with the skills and C&PP test.

Students will also leave the weekend with easily used in-hand tools to continue to practice after the weekend, well beyond testing.

TRULY REPLICABLE

Methods and results are replicable and easily identifiable; people will be able to identify from where you learned to practice and teach. The mark of a true teaching discipline, this removes the issue of movements and teaching practices not being consistent, a concern you’ve perhaps experienced or witnessed elsewhere.

Indian Clubs Component

Integrating other tools such as the Indian Club gives the participant a proven way to improve shoulder mobility, posture, while adding a new movement assessment and teaching how to truly go from tension to relaxation during training session.

A minimum of 3 fundamental patterns will be taught and practiced throughout the weekend, not tested.

Bodyweight Component

The DV8 system of teaching introduces cues and concepts that will make immediate changes and improve the participants’ Push-Ups of all varieties, including Scarito’s One Arm Wedge Push-Up, a DV8 movement.

The student will be tested on the Classic Push-Up (5 reps) to the standard of DV8 mechanics, coined at DV8 as the Wedge Push-Up.

What is a Wedge Push-Up/a Push-Up by DV8 standards? Neck neutral, slightly extended; solid hollow position held and clearly demonstrated throughout the movement; heels behind the toes; feet shoulder-width apart; arms/hands slightly in front of the shoulders, elbows slightly angled towards the ribs. The specifics of this technique—from the ‘why’ to the mechanics—are taught and practiced during your coursework.

The DV8 One Arm Wedge Push-Up is taught and practiced at this course, but it is not tested.
